YOUR MAIN GOAL IS TO ENGAGE STUDENTS IN CONVERSATIONAL ENGLISH.
That is why you are there and getting paid for it. Encourage as many conversations as possible. LISTEN AND LET THEM TALK!
Start now to look for ways to engage them in conversation such as bringing in articles for them to read and speak on. Do skits with them, do plays with them. Engage them in conversation.
Go to ESL on the computer and find a multitude of activities to use.
ASK FELLOW TEACHERS WHAT THEY ARE DOING. EVERYONE HELPS EVERYONE ELSE!!!!
We will furnish you with an extensive resource guide to help you to plan your activities and effectively manage your classes.
Please do not be judgmental with respect to political or religious discussions. You are a guest in their country and everyone knows you are there and why you are there. It is a different culture that you have to adjust to in hurry. It can be done.
Your Teaching Assistant (TA)
Teaching assistants (students with excellent English skills and a good sense of responsibility) are provided by the institution. Your TAs can keep attendance, make copies, help to deal with situations too complicated for the students' limited English and your Chinese, and assist with day-to-day living essentials.
When you are with your TA, PAY for everything. They will protest but they have very little money. They will want to take you out one time for dinner and let them. Let them order for you. Eat everything. Saving face is very cultural.
Chinese Students
You will find that students have the same concerns, as do American students. Getting a job, taking care of their parents, going into the work force, etc.
The Chinese students are the most appreciative, wonderful, caring, shy embarrassed, loving students who try so hard that you love them in return.
They want to learn and they will try hard to do so!!!!
A backpack is extremely useful for carrying books and papers to class.
Bring pictures of family members. The Chinese students are very family conscious and really appreciate your sharing with them about your family. Also bring maps of your State, the United States and of China. Show them where you live and they will show you where they live.
The FIRST DAY WITH THE STUDENTS: you will have them fill out 3x5 cards with their Chinese name, English name, and where they live in China.
Be yourself and enjoy the students. Laugh WITH them not at them.
